Organic or Not? How to Shop Smart Without Breaking the Bank

Let’s face it—walking through the grocery store these days can feel like navigating a minefield. Organic vs. non-organic. Fresh vs. frozen. Natural vs. who-knows-what.

Many people want to buy all organic, but the reality is, it’s not always doable for every family or budget. And here’s the good news: you don’t have to buy 100% organic to make healthier choices.

By understanding where pesticides and chemicals are most commonly found, you can shop smarter—and safer—without overspending.

The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases a helpful guide that highlights the most and least pesticide-contaminated produce items. This list is a great tool for prioritizing which foods you may want to buy organic—and which are lower risk even if bought conventionally.

The Dirty Dozen (Buy Organic When Possible)

These fruits and vegetables have been found to contain the highest levels of pesticide residues:

  1. Apples

  2. Celery

  3. Strawberries

  4. Peaches

  5. Spinach

  6. Nectarines (Imported)

  7. Grapes (Imported)

  8. Sweet bell peppers

  9. Potatoes

  10. Blueberries (Domestic)

  11. Lettuce

  12. Kale / Collard Greens

If you’re going to go organic on anything, start here.

The Clean Fifteen (Lower Pesticide Levels)

These produce items tend to have fewer pesticide residues and are considered safer to buy non-organic:

  1. Onions

  2. Corn

  3. Pineapples

  4. Avocados

  5. Asparagus

  6. Sweet peas

  7. Mangoes

  8. Eggplant

  9. Cantaloupe (Domestic)

  10. Kiwi

  11. Cabbage

  12. Watermelon

  13. Sweet potatoes

  14. Grapefruit

  15. Mushrooms

Knowing this list can help you make more informed, budget-friendly choices when you shop.
