How Susie Found Confidence and Adventure After 50
There comes a point in life when fitness stops being about chasing personal records or fitting into a certain size and starts becoming about something much bigger.
For Susie, that moment arrived when she realized she didn't quite feel like herself anymore.
"Beyond just losing weight, I was really looking to overcome my mid-life sluggish feelings," she says.
She wasn't dealing with a major health issue or recovering from an injury. In many ways, life was good. But something felt off. She no longer felt like the younger version of herself, yet she wasn't ready to accept that getting older meant slowing down.
"I was losing my mojo, no longer felt like my younger self, at the same time not ready to adopt an older version of myself."
Like many people, she knew she wanted to make a change but wasn't entirely sure where to start.
Looking for More Than Weight Loss
Fitness had always been part of Susie's life. She enjoyed group fitness classes, aerobics, and step classes over the years. Long before that, she was a competitive swimmer and even held a state record in the 100-meter backstroke during high school!
But life changes.
By the time she found Studio ME, walking had become her primary form of exercise. While she stayed active, she wasn't feeling as strong, energized, or confident as she wanted to. She also worried that she might be behind everyone else.
"I felt that my fitness level wasn't in a spot to join the experienced members."
It's a fear that keeps a lot of people from getting started. We assume everyone else knows what they're doing and that somehow we need to get in shape before we join a gym.
Fortunately, Susie had a couple of trusted neighbors who helped her take that first step.
"My neighbors Kyle and Kathryn, who I respect and trust, were so enthusiastic about Studio ME!"
Their recommendation gave her the confidence to come check it out.
When she joined, her goal wasn't complicated.
"First things first, I was looking to establish a new pattern."
The early morning Bootcamp classes fit perfectly into her schedule. Rather than focusing on results right away, she focused on showing up. She trusted that if she could build the routine, everything else would follow.
"The early morning routine was my first goal. I was confident that the results would eventually come."
Building Confidence
Before she even got started, Susie had one challenge she had to overcome, and that was wondering how she would ever learn all of the equipment and exercises.
"Beyond my consultation with Lindsay, I was most sensitive about learning how to use the equipment. My inexperience translated to fear and embarrassment."
That feeling is more common than most people realize. Walking into a gym can feel overwhelming when everyone else appears to know exactly what they're doing.
For Susie, the turning point came through coaching.
Luke's coaching was "critical to turning around my attitude. Knowledge is power."
As she learned how to move safely and use the equipment correctly, her confidence began to grow. The things that once felt intimidating became familiar. Instead of worrying about whether she belonged, she started focusing on getting stronger and enjoying the process.
Along the way, she found something she wasn't expecting. Community.
"Beyond the fitness gains, Studio ME's community fills my heart."
She credits the coaches, members, and especially the early morning crew for helping create an environment that feels welcoming, supportive, and fun.
"There's something about early morning activity that builds camaraderie!"
The workouts helped her feel stronger, but the people helped her keep coming back.
A New Adventure
The confidence Susie built wasn't limited to the gym.
It started showing up in other areas of her life, too.
Today, when asked how she feels about the future, her answer is simple:
"Bring it on."
That confidence was put to the test recently when she experienced a major life change. After parting ways with her employer of 28 years, she decided to do something the old version of herself never would have considered.
She packed up and set off on a solo road trip through eight states.
Along the way, she visited national and state parks, tackled challenging hikes, explored new places, and embraced the uncertainty.
"The old me would never have considered it."
Stories like that don't happen because of one workout or one good week in the gym. They happen because of the confidence built through hundreds of small decisions. Showing up. Learning something new. Doing hard things. Realizing you're capable of more than you thought.
For Susie, fitness isn't about trying to turn back the clock. It's about having the strength, energy, and confidence to fully participate in life.
Her advice for anyone thinking about getting started?
"Take a few minutes to connect with a current member. We each have a story to tell and are proud stewards of the Studio ME movement."
Susie's story is a reminder that getting older doesn't mean shrinking your world. Sometimes it means expanding it. With the right support, a little consistency, and the willingness to try something new, you may discover that your next adventure is still ahead of you.
Congratulations, Susie!
Thank you for being such an important part of the Studio ME community. Your positivity, willingness to embrace new challenges, and commitment to showing up continue to inspire everyone around you. We can't wait to see where your next adventure takes you.
